Azore Islands Itinerary – Five Days Exploring Sao Miguel 1


When we put together our itinerary for our visit to the largest of the Azore Islands, Sao Miguel, we saved a day back for spur of the moment plans once we were on the island and had a day on each end for travel. So, although it is actually an eight day trip, we only planned a five day itinerary. Here is what we put together:

Day One – Furnas, Sao Miguel

Explore the town of Furnas, including historic church

  • Pico do Ferro viewpoint
  • Terra Nostra Gardens
  • Lagoa das Furnas
  • Lunch at Terra Nostra – Reservations for traditional cozido stew

Day Two – Vila Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel

Wandering around this lovely islet and then on to some nearby sites.

  • Historic Nossa Senhora da Paz – an amazing church reached by walking up 100 steps. (Oh, my thighs!)
  • Caldeira Velha (To see the falls)
  • Continue to explore Fogo Lake

Day Three – Sao Miguel

Mosteiros , Ponta Delgada

  • Arcadas do Jardim – breakfast
  • Sul Mosteiros Tidal Pools
  • Ponta da Ferraria spa and bath springs

Sete Cidades

  • Lagoa Verde
  • Lagoa Azul

Santo Antonio, Ponta Delgada

Day Four – Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel

  • Tour Ponta Delgada (largest city on the island)
  • Moby Dick whale tours

Day Five –  Sao Miguel

Cha Formoso

Porto Formoso

  • Cha Porto Formoso – Plantacoes de Cha (tea plantation)
  • Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park – Water mills, walkways and a nice waterfall

Nordeste

  • Farol Ponto do Arnel (Farol is lighthouse in Portuguese. I have almost as big a thing for lighthouses as I do for tea. Almost. Tea has caffeine, so obviously wins.)
  • All the gorgeous churches
  • Ponta da Madrugada lookout
  • Ponta do Sossego lookout
  • Reserva Florestal de Recreio da Faja do Rodrigo
  • Cancela do Cinzeiro Recreational Forest Reserve

Agua Retorta

Am I missing something that is a must see in Sao Miguel? If so, let me know so that I can add it to day six of the itinerary for visiting the main island of the Azores.
